Marine Mammal Internship (Unpaid)

The Texas State Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Training Internship program is designed to give college students and recent graduates an opportunity to learn about the care and training of marine mammals and who are interested in pursuing a career in the field.

Interns will work directly and assist the Marine Mammal Training staff with all aspects of animal care and training with our Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), North American River Otters (Lontra canadensis), and Ocelots (Leopardus pardalis). Heavy emphasis is placed on the maintenance of the exhibit (Diving/Cleaning), and basic tasks such as food preparation, daily cleaning/facility maintenance, water quality, and interacting with the public. Interns will shadow trainers in husbandry, training, and enrichment sessions and may also assist in training, husbandry, and enrichment sessions as they gain experience.

Essential Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the preparation of food according to established procedure. 

  • Learn about the care and training of marine mammals through readings, quizzes and observations.

  • Assist in the cleaning and maintenance of utensils and equipment used to feed and care for animals.

  • Assist in facility maintenance of the marine mammal areas including diving.

  • Assist in maintaining the Dolphin Bay wet area.

  • Assist in performing water quality duties.

  • Answer questions from the public about training, exhibitory and/or marine mammals.

  • Enter exhibits by use of SCUBA equipment for cleaning.

    Requested Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age. Must be currently enrolled in college or have recently graduated and have a serious interest in entering the marine mammal training field. Must be able to work as a team, as well as complete tasks individually with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in harsh weather conditions, lift at least 40lbs, and climb stairs. Must be able to work 32 hours per week including weekends and holidays. No previous marine mammal experience is required, but previous animal care experience is preferred. Resume is required, cover letter with resume is preferred.

    Preferred Certification(s): Open Water SCUBA Certification.
